Ingredients - ground beef, seasonings, minced garlic, butter, flour, Parmesan cheese, heavy cream, beef broth, mushrooms

Make Hamburger Steaks

To start making the hamburger steaks, make your ground beef patties.

I like to form 2 lbs of ground beef into 6 (1/3 lb) burger patties and season both sides with burger seasoning.

I like to use McCormick Hamburger seasoning, but you can use any burger seasoning blend you have in your spice cabinet. If you don’t have a specific burger blend salt, pepper, and garlic powder will work just fine!

Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. I like using my cast iron skillet for recipes like this one! The cast iron helps the burger gets a nice sear and browns the burger. These browned bits left in the skillet will add flavor to your gravy.

Fry the ground beef burger patties in the skillet until fully cooked and remove from them from the pan. You will know the meat is fully cooked when it is no longer pink in the middle and reaches an internal temperature of 165 degrees F with a meat thermometer!

I’ve found that letting the burger patties get a nice sear on them before flipping the patties will help the burgers from falling apart. The sear will also give the hamburger steaks great flavor!

If all six burger patties don’t fit in your skillet you can work in batches to cook the burgers, so the pan isn’t overcrowded.

I like to use a meat thermometer in the center of the burger patties to ensure the beef is fully cooked before removing them from the skillet. Beef should temp at 165 degrees F when fully cooked.

Depending on what percentage of fat your ground beef was you may need to discard some of the extra grease before making the gravy.

Make the Creamy Mushroom Gravy

Once your Hamburger Steaks are fully cooked, it’s time to make the creamy mushroom gravy.

I used 80/20 ground beef and had a lot of grease that needed to be removed from the skillet. Keep about 1 tbsp of grease in your skillet. This grease and any extra brown bits in the skillet will give your gravy a beefy flavor.

Next, add sliced mushrooms to the skillet. Stir the mushrooms and let them cook down for a couple of minutes.

I used Baby Bella Crimini Mushrooms in this recipe because they give a deeper mushroom flavor, but sliced white button mushrooms would be another good option.

Once the mushrooms are golden, add minced garlic and stir well.

Add butter and flour and stir those together and let cook for at least 1 minute.

This flour and butter creates a roux and is what will help thicken your gravy! I like to see the roux brown slightly as it cooks this will help the gravy be a richer color.

Next, add beef broth, heavy cream, seasonings, and Parmesan cheese.

Stir until the creamy gravy starts to thicken.

Lower the heat to low heat and add the hamburger steaks back into the skillet.

Cover the fried hamburger steaks with the gravy.

I like to let the Hamburger Steaks sit in the creamy mushroom gravy for a few minutes to soak up all of the delicious flavors of the gravy.

Serve Hamburger Steaks with Mushroom Gravy

Once your Hamburger Steaks have been smothered in Mushroom Gravy, it’s time to eat! Top the Hamburger Steaks and Gravy with some dried parsley and serve over mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles.

I served these Hamburger Steaks with mashed potatoes, green beans, and Rhodes Rolls! This meal is so delicious!

If you have any leftovers of the hamburger steaks, store them in an air tight container in the refrigerator.

Reheat in the microwave or back in a pan on the stove over medium heat. If the gravy separates while reheating it, add a splash of heavy cream and stir well.

You will love this recipe because it’s the ultimate comfort food, made with simple ingredients, and absolutely delicious!

Frequently Asked Questions

What ground beef is best for Hamburger Steaks?

I like using 80/20 ground beef for Hamburger Steaks because it helps the burger patties stay juicy and flavorful! The grease adds a lot of flavor as the hamburger steaks fry in the pan. However, if you want to use a leaner ground beef you can!

What should I serve Hamburger Steaks and Gravy with?

Hamburger Steaks and Mushroom Gravy are so good served over mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles. Serve the beef and gravy with green beans, corn, rolls, cornbread, or any other vegetable your family likes!

How do I know when Hamburger Steaks are fully cooked?

You will know the Hamburger Steaks are fully cooked when the beef is no longer pink in the center. You can cut one open to double check or my favorite way to know for sure is using an internal meat thermometer. The beef should reach a temperature of 165 degrees F in the center when fully cooked.

What is the difference between Hamburger Steak and Salisbury Steak?

Hamburger Steaks are usually ground beef formed into patties, seasoned, and fried, whereas Salisbury steaks are usually mixed together with other ingredients that act as binders like breadcrumbs and eggs. Both can be served with a gravy!

How do I store and reheat leftovers?

If you have any Hamburger Steaks and Gravy leftover, store them in an air tight container in the refrigerator. Reheat them in the microwave or in a pan over medium heat just until warmed. If heating them in a pan and your sauce separates at all or gets too thick add a splash of heavy cream and stir well and it should bring your sauce back together!

Can I make this without mushrooms?

Yes, if you don’t want to make this recipe with mushrooms you can simply omit the mushrooms and the gravy will still be delicious! You could also swap the mushrooms for thinly sliced onions and make an onion gravy instead.
