Sloppy Joe Potato Skillet

Sloppy Joe Potato Skillet

This Sloppy Joe Potato Skillet meal is easy to make and only takes about 30 minutes to come together. This has the classic taste of Sloppy Joes but is served with crispy potatoes and shredded cheddar cheese. If your family loves Sloppy Joes as much as mine I bet they would also love this recipe! It is a great way to switch up Sloppy Joes.

Ingredients

  • 5 small/medium potatoes
  • olive oil + salt, pepper, garlic powder, and paprika (for potatoes)
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 chopped onion
  • 1/2 tsp each of salt and pepper
  • 1 tsp onion powder and paprika
  • 1 TBSP minced garlic
  • 1-2 TBSP Worcestershire
  • 1 8 oz can of tomato sauce
  • 1/4 cup of ketchup
  • 1 TBSP of mustard
  • 2 TBSP of bbq sauce
  • Shredded cheddar cheese

How To Make the Potatoes

To start making the Sloppy Joe Potato Skillet meal, peel about 5 medium sized potatoes. Wash the potatoes and chop them up into cubes.

Once potatoes are washed and chopped, I like to add them to a big bowl and season with 1-2 TBSP of Olive Oil. Next, I add salt, pepper, garlic powder, and smoked paprika. I don’t use exact measurements for this part, but make sure to season them well.

The potatoes will cook in the air fryer at 400 degrees for about 20-25 minutes. I make sure to shake them around at least a couple of times while they cook.

How To Make the Sloppy Joe Mixture

Now that the potatoes are cooking it’s time to make the Sloppy Joe mix! I like making my own sauce for Sloppy Joes, but if you prefer the can of sauce for Sloppy Joes that will definitely work too!

Start by browning a pound of ground beef in a skillet over medium high heat. Add the chopped onion and let those start to cook down.

Next, add the seasonings! I season Sloppy Joes with salt, pepper, onion powder, and paprika. Give this all a good stir and drain any grease from the beef once it has browned.

After browning the meat you want to go ahead and add 1 TBSP of minced garlic, 1-2 TBSP of Worcestershire sauce, 8 oz of tomato sauce, 1/4 cup of ketchup, 1 TBSP of mustard, and 2 TBSP of BBQ sauce. Stir everything together well and let simmer on low while the potatoes finish cooking.

Once the potatoes are cooked to your liking, add them to the skillet of Sloppy Joes and make sure the potatoes and meat mixture are evenly distributed in the skillet. Top the meat and potatoes with shredded cheddar cheese and pop this in the oven under broil just until the cheese is melted. Be sure to watch it, so it doesn’t end up getting burnt!

Serve Sloppy Joe Potato Skillet

Now it’s time to serve the Sloppy Joe Potato Skillet! We always have meals like this with some kind of vegetable! Roasted broccoli, green beans, salad, or air fryer zucchini are some of our easy go-to sides.

Tips and Frequently Asked Questions

  • You can peel the potatoes or leave the peels on if you like that better.
  • I prefer to make my own sauce for the Sloppy Joe’s but if you prefer the canned stuff that will work too!
  • I like shredding blocks of cheddar cheese for a creamier consistency.
  • Fresh minced garlic or the jarred minced garlic will work for this recipe.
  • If you don’t have an air fryer you can cook the potatoes in the oven at 400 degrees for about 25 minutes or until they are cooked how you like them. I would also stir/flip the potatoes around about half way through cooking to make sure they cook evenly.

Made this today and everyone really enjoyed it. The great thing about making sloppy joes from scratch is you can control the amount of salt. There are several people in my family with high blood pressure and high salt really does increase their BP. (They take daily readings at home.) The flavor profile was good, not overly “tomato-pastee “ like some sloppy joes can get. Plan to add it for Sunday game days.

  2. I cheated. I used O’Brian hashbrowns & canned sloppy Joe mix. Air fried the tators , browned the ground beef tossed in the can mix. Let simmer . Added tators ,topped with cheese . Broiled till cheese melted. Umm good . Onions & bell pepper. In the O’Brian hashbrowns made a big difference.

    1. I drizzle mine with evoo and spices on sprayed baking sheet in 500⁰ oven for 45 minutes turning with spatula every 15 minutes

We enjoyed this recipe. Will make it again for sure. We had leftovers so I am hoping they heat up well. The meat had such a good flavor and was a nice change from the “canned” stuff.
