Make BBQ Cheeseburger Foil Packets
To make ground beef foil packets, start by prepping just a few of your ingredients.
Chop an onion, slice the baby carrots in half, and quarter a bag of baby potatoes. Measure out your seasoning blend, too.
Lay out a couple of pieces of aluminum foil. Spray the foil with cooking spray.
Add a handful of potatoes, a handful of onion and some of the sliced baby carrots.

Drizzle a little bit of olive oil over the veggies. Season with a little bit of the seasoning blend.
Top with a 1/4 lb burger patty and season with a little bit more seasoning.
Top the burger with a drizzle of BBQ Sauce.

Wrap aluminum foil up tightly. Repeat until all 4 foil packets are assembled.
Heat a grill over medium heat.

Place foil packets on the grill and cook for about 25 minutes or until the ground beef is fully cooked to 165 degrees F with an internal meat thermometer and the veggies are tender.
I suggest opening a foil packet and checking the meat and potatoes at 20-25 minutes.
If it’s not quite done carefully wrap it back up and place it back on the grill for another 5 minutes.
Once the beef is fully cooked, carefully open the foil packet and add some shredded Colby Jack cheese, bacon, and fried onions.

Place back on the grill to melt the cheese if needed.
Serve Cheeseburger Foil Packets
Once the cheese is melted, it’s time to eat! These grilled foil packet dinners are definitely a whole meal on their own!
I don’t normally serve any extras with this kind of dinner, but if you want an easy side dish a salad or a roll would be good!

Store any leftovers in the refrigerator in an air tight container. Leftovers reheat well in the microwave for lunch the next day.
You’ll love these cheeseburger foil packets because they’re easy to make, so flavorful, and clean up is super easy!
Tips and Substitutions
- The seasoning blend, carrots, onions, and burger patties can all be prepped ahead of time. I would wait to cut potatoes until right before making the foil packets.
- Be sure to cut the potatoes into quarters, so they cook properly.
- Slicing the carrots in half lengthwise will help ensure they are tender.
- Any BBQ sauce your family likes can be used in this recipe. If you aren’t a fan of BBQ sauce these are also good with steak sauce!
- I like my homemade blend for burger seasoning, but if you have a Burger Blend already in your spice cabinet you can use that instead.
- All grills cook differently. I recommend checking the beef and veggies around 20 minutes and grilling them for an additional 5-10 minutes if they are not done. Beef should be cooked to 165 degrees F with an internal meat thermometer.
- Be sure to wrap the foil packets up tightly in aluminum foil. This is key to getting the veggies tender.
- Use a heavy duty aluminum foil for this recipe. Be sure to double wrap them to avoid any leaks.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make this recipe with ground turkey?
Yes, you can use ground turkey formed into patties instead of ground beef, but the flavor and texture may be different.
What other potatoes can I use in foil packet dinners?
I like using baby potatoes because they are so easy to cut, but russet potatoes or Yukon gold potatoes could also be used. I’ve found through testing this recipe that it is really important to cut the potatoes in small uniform sizes to make sure the potatoes end up fork tender.
Can I make foil packets in the oven?
I typically grill them, but if you prefer to bake these in your oven they will bake at 400 degrees F for 25-35 minutes. I would check on the foil packets around 25 minutes and let them cook longer if the burger patty is not fully cooked or the potatoes are not tender.
How should I store and reheat leftovers?
I like to take any leftovers out of the foil and store them in an air tight container in the refrigerator. I microwave the leftovers until warm.
Should I drain the grease?
That is up to you! We don’t typically drain the grease, but if it bothers you go for it! You could carefully drain grease from the foil packet or plate the burger and vegetables on a plate leaving behind most of the grease.
