Smoked Baked Beans

Baked Beans are the perfect side dish for any BBQ or get-together! Any time I smoke meat I love putting on a pan of these easy smoked baked beans.
I like putting these on the smoker when I’ve got something else smoking, but they are also good when made in the oven.
If you like really sweet baked beans, check out my other baked bean recipe. The two recipes are very similar, but the sweet baked beans also include brown sugar.

Ingredients
- 4 21 oz cans of original baked beans
- 1 tsp each of onion powder, chili powder, garlic powder, and BBQ Rub
- 1/4 tsp red pepper flakes
- 1 tbsp minced garlic
- 1 small chopped green pepper
- 1 chopped onion
- 1 cup of ketchup
- 1 cup of BBQ sauce
- 1/4 cup of Dijon mustard
- 2 TBSP of A1 Steak sauce
- 8 strips cooked chopped bacon
Prep the Smoked Baked Beans
This is a really easy dish to throw together! First, cook bacon however you’d like. I prefer to put it in the oven at 400 degrees for 25-30 minutes on a sheet pan lined with parchment paper.
Next, chop one small onion and one small green bell pepper. Once the bacon is cooked chop this up into small pieces.
If putting the beans on a smoker make sure you are using a smoker safe dish and spray it with cooking spray.
Add the four cans of original baked beans, one small chopped green pepper, one small chopped onion, 1 cup of ketchup, 1 cup of BBQ sauce, 1/4 cup of Dijon mustard, 2 tbsp of A1 Steak sauce, and 8 strips of cooked bacon chopped.
Season the baked beans with 1 tbsp each of onion powder, chili powder, garlic powder, and BBQ rub. I also like to add 1/4 tsp of red pepper flakes.
Any BBQ rub can be used for this recipe, but my all time favorite is Strawberry’s Grand Champion BBQ Rub. This is a seasoning local to me, but it is also on amazon.
Stir everything together well.
Cook Smoked Baked Beans
Once all of the ingredients are combined in a dish, you can cook the beans in the oven or on a smoker.
If you are baking them in the oven, preheat the oven to 350 degrees and bake for about 1 hour and 30 minutes, or until they are the consistency you like. The longer they cook the thicker they should get.
If you are cooking the beans on a smoker, turn the smoker to 250 degrees and smoke for 3-5 hours. You can also smoke them at 350 degrees for 1 hour and 30 minutes, or again until they are cooked to your liking.
It helps to give the beans a good stir at least halfway through cooking (whether on the smoker or in the oven so nothing sticks to the bottom of the pan).
If I am smoking meat (like these pork steaks) I like to put the meat over the beans, so any drippings fall into the baked beans giving it even more of that awesome smoked flavor.
Serve Smoked Baked Beans
Once the baked beans are a thicker consistency it’s time to eat! I served the smoked beans with smoked pork steaks and some smoked Cheesy Party Potato Casserole.
Baked beans also go really well with smoked baby back ribs, pulled pork, or grilled steaks.

Instructions
- Cook at least 8 strips of bacon however you'd like. My favorite way is in the oven at 400 degrees for 20-25 minutes. Line the sheet pan with parchment paper for easy clean up.
- While the bacon is cooking, chop one small onion and one small green bell pepper.
- Once the bacon is cooked chop it into small pieces.
- Spray a 9×13 baking dish (or smoker safe dish) with cooking spray and combine all ingredients in the dish. Stir everything together well.
- If cooking these on the smoker, smoke at 350 degrees for 1 hour and 30 minutes, or until they reach the consistency you like. The longer they cook the thicker the consistency should be. If baking in the oven they will also bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour and 30 minutes, or again until they reach the desired consistency.
We made these for the 4th yesterday and they were SO GOOD! Only downside was my fault – we purchased some pre-diced green onion from the store in a small package and used it all. I’m pretty sure that it was more than one pepper and ultimately I think it would taste better with the amount the original recipe called for. My bad! We made these in the oven – next time we will make them in the smoker and I can only imagine how awesome they will be!!! I had leftovers as a bean sandwich this afternoon. Yum! It does make A LOT of beans!!! I’d half the recipe if you aren’t taking them to an event.
